Both the roads and the trails are filled with running activity here on San Juan Island.   About a dozen or so San Juan Runners are gearing up for the 20th running of the Chuckanut 50K on Saturday, March 17.

Some of these runners used the Orcas Fat Ass 25K, on January 28th, to get some good hill running in and evaluate how things were going for them.  I also added the Fragrance Lake 20K on February 12 to spend some time on the trails of Chuckanut.

Chuckanut this year will have close to 700 runners participating.   Normally the race draws between 275 and 300 people.  2011 saw 298 finishers.

Race Director Krissy Moehl really wanted to do the 20th Anniversary in style.  Her goal was to get 1,000 runners out on the trails and it looks like she might be right on target.  With that many runners, the day will be one big running party.

Let’s hope the weather provides some good weeks of clear sky running.
